Container Car Shipping from the UK – FCL & LCL Vehicle Transport
Container car shipping transports vehicles inside sealed 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft High Cube steel ISO containers from UK ports to over 50 countries. Ship Cars provides both FCL (exclusive-use) and LCL (shared) container services, with weekly sailings from London Gateway, Southampton, Felixstowe, Tilbury, and Grangemouth. Container is the required method for electric vehicles, non-runners, classic cars, and high-value vehicles. Personal effects can travel alongside the vehicle in a dedicated container. FCL pricing starts from £990 to Hong Kong and £1,705 to Australia (2026 rates, port-to-port).
Why Choose Container Shipping for Your Vehicle?
If your vehicle is too valuable, too rare, or simply too important to share open deck space on a RoRo vessel, container shipping is the answer. Your car is loaded into a sealed steel shipping container at our UK facility, professionally lashed and braced to certified CTU Code standards (UNECE/ILO/IMO Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units), and shipped on a deep-sea container vessel to the destination port. The container remains sealed from origin to destination — no handling, no weather exposure, and no third-party access at transhipment ports.
Container shipping is also the only compliant method for transporting electric vehicles by sea. Under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code, Amendment 42-24), lithium-battery-powered vehicles classified under UN 3171 must meet enhanced pre-shipment condition verification and state-of-charge documentation requirements before loading. Ship Cars handles all IMDG compliance, hazard declarations, and carrier documentation on your behalf — so you do not need to navigate the regulations yourself.
FCL vs LCL — Which Container Service Do You Need?
FCL (Full Container Load) gives you exclusive use of the entire container. Choose from a 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft High Cube unit and load personal effects, spare parts, or household goods alongside your vehicle. FCL offers maximum security, zero co-loading risk, and a direct seal from origin to destination. It is the standard choice for classic cars, supercars, EVs, non-runners, and personal relocation shipments.
LCL (Less than Container Load) consolidates your vehicle or cargo with other shipments in a shared container. It is significantly cheaper for smaller consignments — motorcycles, palletised parts, or single vehicles on budget-sensitive routes. Our team manages expert packing, labelling, palletising, and bracing. LCL services depart weekly to most major international destinations.
Shipping Electric and Hybrid Vehicles by Container
Electric vehicles must travel inside a container — they cannot use RoRo services under current international maritime regulations. All lithium-battery-powered vehicles are classified as dangerous goods under UN 3171 and require a formal dangerous goods declaration, pre-shipment battery condition verification, and state-of-charge documentation per IMDG Code Amendment 42-24.
Ship Cars applies a hazard surcharge of £295 per dedicated container for EV shipments. This covers IMDG-compliant labelling, container placarding under the IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code, and carrier acceptance documentation. We provide battery preparation instructions aligned with the January 2026 mandatory requirements.

What Export Documentation Is Required?
Ship Cars manages the full UK export customs declaration through HMRC’s Customs Declaration Service (CDS) and arranges the Bill of Lading for every shipment. The Bill of Lading is the title document for your cargo — required for customs clearance at destination and essential to keep secure.
Key documents for vehicle exports include the V5C registration certificate (or V5C/2 for permanent export notification to DVLA), a commercial invoice, and any destination-specific import permits or compliance certificates. We brief every customer on route-specific requirements and can recommend trusted port agents at the destination.
Marine Insurance — Is It Worth It?
Marine transit insurance is not legally mandatory, but Ship Cars strongly recommends it. We offer two tiers of cover:
Total Loss Cover: 1% of vehicle value + shipping cost. Covers total loss from fire, sinking, or heavy weather during transit.
Comprehensive Cover: 1.5% of vehicle value + shipping cost. Covers cosmetic damage plus total loss. Available for vehicles under 10 years old. A pre-shipment condition report is required — free with our collection service, or £35 for self-delivery.
Cover is underwritten in accordance with Institute Cargo Clauses (A) — the broadest standard marine insurance terms recognised internationally.
What Container Sizes Are Available?
Ship Cars uses standard ISO containers certified under the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). The three sizes most commonly used for vehicle shipments are:
Container Type | Internal Dimensions | Volume (m³) | Typical Use |
20ft Standard | 5.89m × 2.33m × 2.38m | 33.18 | 1 standard car |
40ft Standard | 12.01m × 2.33m × 2.38m | 67.67 | 2 cars or car + effects |
40ft High Cube | 12.01m × 2.33m × 2.69m | 76.28 | SUVs, vans, motorhomes |
Internal dimensions can vary slightly between manufacturers. Please confirm suitability for oversized or modified vehicles before booking.

How Car Shipping Worldwide Handles Your Container Shipment
Every container shipment we handle follows the same disciplined, hands-on process our team has refined across [X] years of moving vehicles by sea. When you book, a dedicated shipping coordinator takes ownership of your consignment from collection to arrival — you deal with a named person who knows your vehicle, your route, and your paperwork, not a call centre. We arrange UK-wide collection by trade-plate driver or covered transporter, or you can deliver to one of our loading facilities directly.
At the facility, our own trained staff load and secure the vehicle — we do not hand this to a third party at the dock. The car is positioned on wooden bearers to protect the undercarriage, chocked, and lashed to the container floor in line with the IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code. Before the doors are sealed, we complete a documented condition report with photographs, and the seal number is recorded against your Bill of Lading so the box is traceable and tamper-evident for the entire voyage.
Behind that operational care sits genuine regulatory expertise. We prepare and submit the UK export declaration through HMRC’s Customs Declaration Service (CDS), arrange the Bill of Lading, and handle all IMDG dangerous-goods documentation for electric and hybrid vehicles in-house. As a member of the Road Haulage Association (RHA) [and confirm any further memberships — BIFA / FTA], with marine transit cover available up to your declared value, We stands behind every container that leaves the UK. We brief you on destination customs, duties, and clearance requirements before your vehicle sails — so there are no surprises when it arrives at the other end.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between FCL and LCL container shipping?
FCL (Full Container Load) gives you exclusive use of a 20ft, 40ft, or 40ft High Cube container — maximum security with the ability to include personal effects alongside your vehicle. LCL (Less than Container Load) consolidates your cargo with other shipments in a shared container, reducing cost for smaller consignments. Most vehicle shipments use FCL for security and flexibility.
Can I ship an electric vehicle by container?
Yes — and container is the only compliant method for shipping EVs by sea. Electric vehicles are classified as dangerous goods under UN 3171 (IMDG Code) due to their lithium batteries. A hazard surcharge of £295 applies. Ship Cars handles all IMDG compliance documentation and provides battery preparation guidance per Amendment 42-24 requirements.
Can I ship a non-running vehicle?
Yes. Non-running vehicles can be loaded into a container using a forklift or winch — the vehicle does not need to be driveable. Non-runners cannot travel via RoRo, which requires vehicles to drive on and off the vessel under their own power.
How long does container shipping take from the UK?
Yes — in an FCL (dedicated) container. Personal effects, spare parts, and household goods can travel alongside your vehicle provided they are securely packed, properly braced, and fully declared on the customs documentation. Hazardous and prohibited items are not permitted. Destination customs rules on personal effects vary by country — Ship Cars advises on route-specific restrictions at time of booking.
Can I put personal belongings in the container with my car?
Approximate transit times from London Gateway: Jeddah 16 days, Jebel Ali (Dubai) 28 days, Hong Kong 40 days, Australia 47–66 days, New Zealand 65 days. Allow additional time for port handling and customs clearance at the destination port after vessel arrival.
What documents do I need to ship a car from the UK by container?
You will need the V5C registration certificate (or V5C/2 for permanent export notification to DVLA), a commercial invoice, and any destination-specific import permits. Ship Cars manages the UK export customs declaration via HMRC’s Customs Declaration Service (CDS) and arranges the Bill of Lading for every container shipment.
