The Used Car Buying Checklist

Buying a used car is an exciting step, but it requires careful planning to ensure you get a reliable vehicle at a fair price. This comprehensive checklist guides you through the essential steps before, during, and after your purchase.

Before You Buy Used Cars: Research & Preparation

Thorough preparation is the key to a successful purchase and prevents costly mistakes.

  1. Set Your Budget: Determine your total budget, including insurance, road tax (VED), and a contingency fund for immediate repairs or servicing.
  2. Research Models: Identify 2-3 car models that fit your needs and budget. Use online reviews and owner forums to learn about common faults and running costs.
  3. Check Market Prices: Use valuation tools (like Parker’s or Auto Trader) to understand the fair market price for your chosen model, year, and mileage.
  4. Arrange Finance (if needed): Secure a loan agreement in principle from your bank or a lender before viewing cars, so you know exactly what you can afford.
  5. Run an Online History Check: Before viewing, obtain a vehicle history report (e.g., from the RAC, AA, or HPI) using the car’s registration number. This checks for:
    • Outstanding finance.
    • Stolen vehicle status.
    • Previous insurance write-offs (Category S/N).
    • Mileage discrepancies.
    • Number of previous owners.

When You View & Buy: The Inspection & Purchase

The Ultimate Used Car Buying Checklist

This is your chance to verify the car’s condition and paperwork.

The Physical Inspection

  • Exterior: Check for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint (signs of repair), and rust, especially around wheel arches and sills.
  • Interior: Test all switches, lights, and electronics. Look for excessive wear on the driver’s seat, pedals, and steering wheel inconsistent with the mileage.
  • Tyres: Ensure tread depth is above the legal 1.6mm minimum and check for even wear across all tyres.
  • Engine Bay: Look for oil leaks, check fluid levels, and listen for unusual noises when the engine is started from cold.
  • Test Drive: Drive for at least 20 minutes. Test acceleration, braking, steering, and listen for rattles. Ensure gears change smoothly.

The Paperwork & Negotiation

  • Key Documents: Inspect the V5C Logbook (check the registered keeper’s details match the seller). Check the MOT certificate and history online for advisories and failures.
  • Service History: A full service book with stamps from a reputable garage is ideal. Verify receipts for any major work claimed.
  • Negotiate: Use any issues found during inspection or in the history check as leverage to negotiate the price down.
  • Payment: Never pay in cash. Use a secure bank transfer for a clear audit trail. Get a signed, dated receipt from the seller that includes both your details, the car’s details, the price, and sold “as seen”.

After You Buy A Used Car: The Essential Admin

Complete these steps immediately to ensure you are legal and protected.

  1. Tax the Vehicle: You must tax the car in your name before driving it. Do this online instantly using the 12-digit reference number from the V5C/2 green slip.
  2. Insure the Car: Arrange insurance cover to start from the moment you become the owner. It is illegal to drive without it.
  3. Notify the DVLA: The seller will complete their part of the V5C. You must complete the new keeper slip (V5C/2) and send it to the DVLA. The full logbook will be posted to you.
  4. Get a Professional Service: Book a full service with a trusted mechanic soon after purchase to address any hidden issues and establish a new maintenance baseline.
